General Statistics
  • A 2005 study by the U.S. Department of Justice reports two in five incidents go unreported to authorities.
  • A 1998, National Violence Against Women Survey found that women are 7 to 14 more likely than men to report suffering severe physical assaults from an intimate partner.
  • A 2004 study completed by the Violence Policy Center reported that of females killed with a firearm, almost 2/3 were killed by their intimate partners.
Domestic Violence in Texas*
  •  The Violence Policy Center, 2006, reports that in Murder-Suicides, Texas led the nation with 18 incidents in a six-month period from January 1 - June 30, 2005. 96% were females killed by their intimate partners. 
  • The Texas Department of Public Safety Uniform Crime Report, 2005, states that 187,811 family violence incidents were reported by law enforcement involving 199,574 victims and 195,174 offenders in 2005
  • In 2005, 143 women were killed by their intimate partner or spouse in Texas.

    • El Paso Police Department receives 2500 domestic violence calls per month.
    • On average, El Paso Police Department receives 2500 domestic violence-related calls per month.

      Domestic Violence and Pregnancy
      • A 200 study in Maternal and Child Health Journal estimated about 324,000 pregnant women in this country are battered by their parents each year.
      • A 2004, time and point survey by the El Paso Coalition of the Homeless reports that 50% of pregnant women being housed by homeless shelters are victims of domestic violence.
      Child Abuse and Domestic Violence
      • In a national survey of more than 50,000 Americans families, 50% of men who frequently assaulted their wives also frequently assaulted their children.
